How (and why) to Use Our Fly Rod Outfit Builder

What is the Fly Rod Outfit Builder?

The Montana Casting Co. Fly Rod Outfit Builder is our way of allowing you to build the fly rod-reel combo you’ve been daydreaming about at a discounted price. Your package will include a fly rod (along with a rod case and sock), fly fishing reel, backing, fly line, and leader of your choice. We’ll spool your line onto your reel for either left or right-handed retrieve and let you choose how you want your leader connected to the fly line, just like going to a fly shop. When you order your Outfit, we’ll call to double-check that it arrives exactly the way you want it. The best part? You’ll get a 15% discount on the entire outfit at checkout.

How to find the Outfit Builder on the Montana Casting Co. Site:

There are a number of ways to access the Outfit Builder across the site. Select “Fly Rod & Reel Combos” from the main navigation and scroll to the bottom of the list to find “Outfit Builder.” Alternatively, you can select the “Build Your Fly Rod Combo” button on any of the fly rod, fly reel, or fly line product pages right beneath the “Add to Cart” button.

How to build a fly rod combo with the Outfit Builder:

1. Choose your fly rod. At this stage, the rods are broken out by number of pieces and fly rod weight. You’ll find most of our rods come in 2 and 4-piece models and are available in 4 through 9wt. If you aren’t familiar with our rods, it can be helpful to start your outfit by researching rod models on our website or giving us a call at 406-285-1452. We’re always happy to help! Once you’ve decided, simply scroll through the alphabetized options until you’ve found the weight and number of pieces you’d like and click “Select Option”.
2. Choose your fly fishing reel. You can choose the Lite, Envy, or Elite 406 models. Each is offered with the choice of a 4/6 wt reel or a 7/9 wt reel. We’ll double-check your order to make sure your reel matches the weight of the fly rod you selected. (Don’t worry, we’ll call to confirm your selections to ensure you get precisely what you want!)
3. Choose your fly line. This is another step that can feel like an overwhelming number of options, but it's simpler than it first appears. Similar to the rods, this page shows you all three of our fly line models, broken out by specific line weights. If you don’t already know which line you need, you can read our blog on the best uses for each of our lines or give us a call at 406-285-1452.
4. Select fly line backing. This comes in 100-yard spools of 20Ib braid.
5. Select your leader. We offer a tapered-monofilament leader with a loop on the end to make it easy to attach to the welded loop on our fly lines. You’ll need to select the size and length of your leader from a drop-down menu above the “Select Option” button (we offer 2x through 6X in 7.5 or 9 ft options).
6. Reel spooling. Now’s the time to let us know which hand you reel with. If you’d prefer us not to spool your reel for you, choose "No Reel Spooling” and click “Select Option.” If you’d like your reel spooled at no extra cost to you, you’ll need to select right or left-handed retrieve, how you want your leader connected to your line, and whether you want a butt section... All of which can be done from the drop-down menu above the “Select Option” button.
7. Review and add to cart. On a desktop, you’ll see a summary of your choices on the right-hand side of your screen. On mobile, you simply need to scroll down to see it. Once you’ve double-checked these choices, you can add them to the cart and see the discounted total.
