Rods, Reels, and Lines
Can Montana Casting Co rods & reels be used in saltwater?
Any reels that are fully anodized aluminum can be used as saltwater reels (Envy and Elite Models). Additionally, our Dearborn fly rod has an anodized aluminum and graphite reel seat and all 7 through 9 Wt rods come standard with a removable anodized aluminum butt cap and fighting butt with anodized aluminum fittings.
We always recommend cleaning and rinsing your gear with fresh water after use in saltwater; saltwater is very corrosive and extended exposure can cause damage to your gear.
Broke my rod. What do I do?
In some instances, damage may be covered by our Montana Handshake Warranty. See our warranty page for more information.
How do I change my reel from left to right-handed retrieve?
See our Montana Casting Co Instruction videos: the Elite 406 or the Envy & Lite 406. Once the factory seal has been broken on the dust cover (and after each subsequent removal), we recommend using a touch of silicon on the bottom of the dust cover where the rubber “O” ring is located. A little goes a long way—make sure you don’t get silicon on any of the drag components, bearings, etc.
Why do my ferrules keep coming apart?
Loose ferrules are generally caused by not being tightened down effectively. Dirt and grime could also be causing the ferrule to not fit together properly. Do not use wax on the ferrules—this will cause the ferrule to slide apart when casting. However, waxing your rod with a quick wipe of Pledge to protect it prior to storage is good practice as long as you do not get it on the ferrules.
My ferrule is stuck. How do I get it apart?
Get the ferrule as cold as you can. Try putting ice on the stuck ferrule by wrapping it in an ice filled towel or zip lock bag. Once it’s nice and cool, try to pull the sections apart with a small twist at the ferrule. We recommend using rubber gloves or something with a similarly grippy surface. This will help prevent your hands from sliding and damaging guides. Using two people can also be helpful but be sure to keep the rod straight to avoid damaging the rod. Do not use excessive force!
What is the best line for my rod?
Montana Casting Co has three different line models to choose from depending on the condition or type of fish you are targeting. Here’s a link to our fly line page for specifics on each model of line. Our rods and reels will also work with any other manufacture’s lines.
Do I need to clean my fly line?
Yes—we recommend washing your fly line in warm water with a dish soap like Dawn at least once a year or whenever you’re storing your rod for long periods of time. There are several good fly line cleaning products on the market that you can use as well.
What are Montana Casting Company rods named after?
Each of our models is named after a fishing access site in Montana. These sites bear special significance to us, both for the fish we've caught there and the memories we made. In naming our rods after places like this, we hope to honor those memories and the beautiful state we call home.
Custom-Built Fly Rods
How long will it take to build my custom rod?
Generally, rods are shipped 4 to 5 weeks from the date of the order. If you need your rod by a certain date, please let us know when you order the rod. We will do our best to get you your rod by the requested date. We may also use different shipping methods as needed to meet your date.
