Pair Your Rod With:
Description
Designed as a “two-line” fly rod, a quick spool change enables you to equip this durable, fast-action rod for any number of fly fishing scenarios without sacrificing control. For example, rig a 5wt Dearborn with a 5wt line and you’ll get high line speeds coupled with a softer presentation, perfect for dry fly fishing. That same 5wt fly rod can be overlined with a 6wt line—transforming it into a powerful, line-launching machine capable of driving heavy nymphs and streamers through the wind.
The Dearborn is made with original Montana Casting Company blanks crafted from a durable T800 Toray Carbon & Woven Carbon Fiber composition. A CNC-machined aluminum and carbon fiber reel seat resists corrosion and you’ll get a removeable fighting butt with the purchase of any 7wt through 9wt fly fishing rod—making this our most saltwater-ready rod. We recommend the Dearborn to seasoned fly fishermen looking to get the most out of their rod in a broad range of fly fishing conditions.
All of our fly rods come with a rod sock and rod/reel combo case.

A note on the Dearborn model: Fewer ferrules means fewer interruptions in a rod's flexibility and performance. For peak performance, we recommend ordering the Dearborn as a two-piece rod but we've tacked on a four-piece option just in case you're looking for something a bit more travel-ready.
Caring for Your Rod
Always rinse your rod with fresh water after a hard day of fishing in the salt. Saltwater will cause corrosion without proper washing and maintenance of your gear.
Though our rods are durable, no rod is completely break-proof. For some great tips on keeping your rod in good shape and avoiding rookie moves, see our blog: Caring for Your Fly Fishing Rod
For additional tips on how to keep from breaking your rod, read on:
- Don't ever leave your rod on the ground or near car doors - use your imagination here.
- If you hit a snag, don't try to free your fly with your rod. Instead, point your rod tip directly at the snag (or upstream of it if you can) and apply gentle pressure to release (or break the line).
- Always try to use good casting technique. This may sound a little silly, but when a fly, or worse yet, a sinker, hits your fly rod on the back cast, it can damage the epoxy, causing a weak spot in your rod.
- Do not hold your rod more than 90 degrees from the water when fighting or landing a fish. This puts too much stress on the rod and is a common cause of breakage.
- Be sure your rod is firmly secured at the ferrules. Many-a-rod breaks due to loose ferrules.
- Keep your hands on the cork while fighting and landing fish. Don't try to support the rod above the cork on the shaft.
- Be careful of hitting your rod against trees, the ground, vehicles, doorways of your house, or anything else. Again, this can damage the finish, and create a weak spot in your rod. When this happens, in time. the rod may "inexplicably" break.
How Did We Name Our Fly rods?
The Dearborn is named after the Dearborn fishing access, located just east of the confluence of the Dearborn River with the Missouri... The Dearborn Fishing Access is a special place that brings back memories from a time long past. We’d put in above the Dearborn on hot summer days to float the Mighty Mo. Whether we we’re hammering fish on dries or nymphs, there was always time to pull off at the gravel bar just below the confluence of the Dearborn and the Missouri. After a few casts with the sun beating down from above, we’d set our fishing rods aside and go for a dip. Once we’d had our fill of cool river water, we would sit and eat lunch—watching the dog continue to run up to the top of the riffle and ride the waves down. Inevitably, the river would call once more, and we’d clamber back into the boat with our fly rods at the ready.
